In the last few months, I’ve played around a bit with Lightroom’s AI Masking:
AI Masking for both Select Subject, Sky and Background are now available in Lightroom on the web, which means that with one tap only you can detect and create an adaptive mask based on the contents of the image — without having to download an app or leave the browser.

I’ve been using it both on the macOS and the iOS apps, and I’m very impressed. The masking selection is most of the time spot-on, even without the option of recognising faces.
When it isn’t, it’s easy to deselect parts of the selection. In the below screenshot, you can see I was easily able to deselect one of the two people in the photo. You’ll see as well that you can even single out certain features of that person.
I mostly use it to make sure that the subject gets the full attention. When you shoot against a much brighter background, like inside while the sun is peaking through the windows, you want to increase the exposure on the subject without overexposing the outside. I’ve found that being able to single out the subject alone is mostly enough.
