WordCamp Harare

Last weekend, Jetpack and WooCommerce sponsored the first WordCamp in Zimbabwe ever. My colleague, Herman, and I attended as representatives of the company, and also took a speaking slot.

Below are some of the pics I took on Saturday. It’s always great attending WordCamps and other open-source conferences in Africa. People are so friendly and welcoming, and very keen to learn and share knowledge.

One of the things I like the most about attending conferences in the South is the creativity. In Europe or the USA, the starting position is often one of access. That is not the case in many African settings. While that creates a lot of challenges, those challenges at the same time encourage increased creativity.

Limited availability to payment gateways makes it necessary to think outside of the box in terms of eCommerce. Slow internet speeds force developers to think carefully about how to build their website.
