Since Mila’s second birthday, I’ve started having fun with fondant to make cake toppers for her birthdays. At the end of November, we celebrated Luca’s first year on earth, so I guess it’s now two cake toppers per year.
Luca is obsessed with a night light we have of Nijntje (Miffy), so it was an easy decision to make that into a cake topper. This was by far the fastest one I’ve ever done. Nijntje was both fairly small and not a complex figurine, so I finished it in half an hour. For comparison, I don’t think I ever spent less than 4 hours on the other toppers. That said, I’ve also just gotten more confident in handling fondant.
So far, I’ve each time been able to try a new technique, and Nijntje was no different: this is the first cake topper where I used a pen with edible ink. It’s a small thing of course, but it made the eyes and mouth of both Nijntje and the stuffy toy super easy.
Since Luca doesn’t really eat sugar yet, Kim made a smash cake that was sugar-free (other than the sprinkles), the icing is made of ground freeze-dried blueberries and cream cheese.
