Belgium, France and England

One of the big advantages of both Kim and me working remotely is that we aren’t tied to a single location. A few months ago, that meant that we were able to spend almost seven weeks in Europe without taking much leave.

Itinerary

I love living in South Africa, but at the same time, I do miss my Belgian friends and my family. Our stay in June and July was an amazing time to reconnect with the people I hold so dearly to my heart.

Because of work, it was also a busy time. We arrived in Belgium and went straight for a weekend away with family. A few days later, I spoke at a WordPress meetup in Antwerp. Later that week, we travelled to Paris for WordCamp Europe, the biggest WordPress event in the world. After that we went back to my parents in Ypres where I spoke at another WordPress meetup.

In July, we also took almost two weeks of leave. The first part was spent in the Provence in the South of France with my parents, and my brother and his family. This was the longest I had spend with my nephew and niece since I left for South Africa and it’s probably been one of my favourite experiences in the last years. More than anything else, missing out on seeing those kids grow up is challenging. This time away with them was precious.

We ended our trip with a visit to London, where we have several friends and family members living as well. We got to experience the Wimbledon excitement, did the Bermondsey Beer Mile, and just had fun with friends.
